The Western AlgarvePortugal's Western Algarve stretches from Lagos in the East to the dramatic cliffs of Cape St Vincent in the West then turns Northwards incorporating the beaches of the Atlantic Coast. Colourful Lagos, once the launching point, for Portugal’s epic voyages of discovery, has been a local centre of commerce since medieval times. Here you will find markets offering a wide variety of local produce, a fascinating fish market and a vibrant marina. In the evening the narrow cobbled streets are ideal for exploring to find a place to eat or to watch the street performers. The Western Algarve boasts some of the most beautiful and least crowded beaches in Europe. Along the South Coast are many sheltered coves and larger beaches to choose from. Some of the larger beaches offer water sports such as water skiing, jet ski hire, windsurfers and dinghies. Each beach has its own character and charm. In addition there are plenty of beach bars and restaurants to choose from. Surfers in search of long Atlantic rollers can explore the Western Algarve coast, where Praias do Cordoama, do Castelejo, Do Amando and Da Arrifana to name but a few await. The green hills of the volcanic Monchique mountain range offers the chance to experience a different Algarve away from the beaches. Cork oaks, chestnut and eucalyptus trees grow on the hillsides. The meadows are alive with wild flowers in the springtime. Here nestles the town of Monchique which has been a spa since Roman times. Portugal's Western Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. In the summer the heat is moderated by cooling North Westerly Atlantic breezes. Most of the rainfall occurs between November and February. The period from the end of May until mid September is dry with only 6% of the annual rainfall of 515mm occurring during that period. Average maximum and minimum daytime temperatures for Portugal's Western Algarve are as follows:
The temperature of the Atlantic water is fairly constant typically varying between 14oC and 18oC. |
